I do not know where this situation will take us. I feel that Egypt is at the verge of violent demonstrations, another revolution, or civil war. We do not know what is going to happen, but we know that we are at the edge of something drastic. One year ago Dr Mohammed Mursi became the President of Egypt, following months of turbulence in the socio-economic and political situation in Egypt. Many had hoped that Egypt would move forward for the better however things became worse and are now very difficult. Egyptians became divided between Islamists and non-Islamists. A constitution that was written and approved in haste was one of the main reasons for these divisions. Other reasons were the exclusion of moderates and non-Islamists from participation in the political life, and the appointment of Islamists as ministers in the Cabinet and other prominent posts. These divisions led to instability, a lack of security, and many demonstrations which in turn badly affected the economy and tourism. People started to complain about the rise of food prices, the frequent power cuts, the sectarian clashes, and lately the lack of fuel. Two weeks ago there were demonstrations in several governorates in objection to the appointment of new governors who are known Islamists. A new movement called, “tamarrod” or “Rebellion” was formed last April and they called for massive demonstrations against the President and the government on the 30th of June. They claim to have gathered the signatures of 15 million supporters. One week ago the Islamists made big demonstrations in support of the President. They warned the supporters of “tamarrod” against demonstrating on the 30th of June. “Anyone who will sprinkle water at the President will be sprinkled with blood,” said one of the supporters of the President. This means that there will be bloodshed if people try to force the President to step down. Some Islamists also threatened the Christians if they participated in the demonstrations. Others produced a fatwa saying that those who would demonstrate are “kafiroon” or “godless” and deserve to be fought against. The Grand Imam of Al Azhar stated that, anyone can demonstrate to express his or her views and this has nothing to do with faith” His Holiness, Pope Tawadros II, of the Coptic Orthodox Church said, “everyone is free to express his or her views.”Yesterday, in an attempt to calm thesituation, the President delivered a 2.5 hour speech. Unfortunately, the speech stirred the people even more. Demonstrations started yesterday at Tahrir Square and in the Province of Mansoura where dozens were injured and two people were killed. Now the military tanks have started to move in to protect the important sites. What is going to happen on the 30th of June? We do not know! All what we know is that when emotions run high, anything can happen. However, we trust that God is in control and we are in His hands. Two days ago during his visit to Egypt, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, encouraged us by using St Paul’s words, while in the middle of a storm, “But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost” (Acts 27:22a). I am writing this to request your prayers for Egypt and for the people of Egypt.May the Lord bless you!+ Mouneer EgyptThe Most Rev. Forty days after Jesus was born. February 2nd, according to our current calendar. But how did the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple become Groundhog Day?In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” It was not hard for people who lived by candlelight to make the connection. At some point in history people began bringing candles to the priests to be blessed 40 days after the celebration of the birth of Christ. The ceremony was called, “Candle Mass.”But how many candles should one bring to be blessed? You wanted enough to make it through the rest of the winter, right?Long term weather predictions are hard enough with modern technology. Centuries ago it was primarily based upon superstitions. In Germany they used hedgehogs:“If the hedgehog sees his shadow at Candlemas,He will crawl back into his hole for another six weeks”German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition, although they switched from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in North America.Note the connection to Candlemas Day. Also note the “reverse psychology.” If the sun is shining on 2/2 we will have 6 more weeks of winter. How accurate is that groundhog anyway?According to the Stormfax Almanac the groundhog’s seasonal forecasting accuracy is somewhat low, having been correct only 39% of the time.Dale Fenwick is the Publisher of The Apopka Voice Please enter your comment! On the north-western edge of the Greenwich Village Historic District, Jane Street is characterised by a mix of red brick townhouses and larger apartment blocks, mainly dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries respectively. This new apartment building is located on a site previously occupied by a 1920s, two-storey parking garage. The six-storey building comprises basement parking, duplex townhouses, lateral apartments, and a penthouse with its own roof garden. Mediating between the different sizes of the surrounding structures, the inserted volume both respects the scale of the street and reflects its architectural context.Save this picture!© James Ewing / JBSAThe five storeys that can be seen from street level offer a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding brick townhouses, with a distinct articulation of base, middle and crown. The scale of the entrances as well as the rhythm of the windows, combined with the use of mullions and string courses, reference the rich domestic architecture of the West Village. Local context is also referenced through the colours and materials of the façades.Save this picture!© James Ewing / JBSASave this picture!Floor planSave this picture!© James Ewing / JBSAThe building has a symmetrical composition, with the townhouse entrances recessed at either end of the ground floor. In the centre is the larger double entrance for the apartments and the garage. The windows differ in design for each element of the residential scheme. The two-storey townhouses, for example, have balconied French windows, while the lateral apartments on the two storeys above have broader openings divided by concrete mullions. The penthouse at the top, with its higher ceilings, is set back from the street. It can be read as a simple post and beam structure, framing large windows that overlook a private garden.Save this picture!© James Ewing / JBSARed pigmented concrete is used for the ground floor giving it a strong sculptural presence. The upper storeys are clad in Roman brick, with string courses, lintels and mullions in the same red concrete, providing subtle colour variations throughout. The street front is crowned by a projecting cornice, which echoes the projecting string course between ground and first floors and gives extra shadow and articulation to the façade. The structure of the penthouse also uses red concrete.Save this picture!© James Ewing / JBSARestrained but solid materials are used throughout, with bronze railings and window and door frames outside and terrazzo floors in the communal areas. None of them ever tried to overthrow the regime. We continue to demand their release.”Son’s sentence was reduced from 13 years in prison to four, while Duyet’s was reduced from four years to three and a half. The sentences of the other three (13 years for Hoa, and four years for Dung and Nhat) were confirmed. Follow-up probation periods of three to five years were also confirmed.During the hearing, each of the defendants criticized the harshness of their sentences and insisted they never intended to overthrow the government.Son became extremely upset during the hearing on learning that his mother had died a few months ago. He had not previously been told this. In his final words, spoken just before the judge issued his ruling, he asked to be forgiven for his “errors” and requested a milder sentence so that he could go home and care for his mother’s grave.Until then he had been the only defendant to refuse to ask for forgiveness. Dung, for his part, said: “If this country is democratic, I will be acquitted by this appeal court.”As at the original trial, the atmosphere at today’s hearing was very tense. Yesterday, the police asked bus owners to refuse to drive relatives of the defendants to the appeal court. State-owned bus companies also suspended their usual services. The tension around the courthouse increased when around 2,000 policemen began mingling with the estimated 500 people who turned up to support the five bloggers. Mobile phones were unable to find a network connection anywhere near the courthouse. Two bloggers, Bui Minh Hang and La Viet Dung, were arrested before reaching the courthouse. Tran Thuy Nga, a land rights activist who had come to support the five bloggers, was also arrested.A policeman responsible for security hit the netizen Tu Anh Tu in the chest as he approached the court. On his Facebook page, Tu said he had not been hurt by the blow but by the fact that he had been targeted by officials who are supposed to serve the people. He also criticized the government’s passive stance on Vietnam’s territorial disputes with China. The five bloggers were accused of having links with Viet Tan, a pro-democracy party based in the United States that is banned in Vietnam and regarded as a “terrorist” organization by the government. The appeals of three young activists who were tried with the five bloggers were also heard yesterday. On 16 May, a court in Long An sentenced two young bloggers, Dinh Nguyen Kha and Nguyen Phuong Uyen, to eight and six years in prison respectively, followed by three years of house arrest.According to the indictment, there were accused of maintaining contact via Facebook with a Vietnamese dissident now living abroad, who urged them to join the “Patriotic Youth,” a group that the authorities call “reactionary.” Organisation April 7, 2021 Find out more
By Odessa American – April 22, 2021 Twitter Pay raises for Ector County ISD employees will be considered when the district Board of Trustees meets in June to approve the budget. The board discussed the increases during the April 20 meeting and Superintendent Scott Muri expanded on it during his media call Wednesday. He also reminded families that today (Friday) is vacation day for students and a professional development day for district staff.“They (trustees) are currently considering multiple options of which they’re all excited. We would like to provide a 3 percent raise to all salaried employees in ECISD. In addition to that, we would like to raise the minimum teachers’ salary to $57,000 per year. Currently our starting teachers get $54,250,” Muri said.“We’d also like to give a 4 percent across-the-board raise to hourly employees in ECISD,” he added. “… And finally we’d like to raise our minimum wage for hourly employees to a minimum of $12 an hour. Currently, it’s $11.21.”Additionally, Muri said, the district wants to provide a one-time payment of $750 to all employees of ECISD.“The pandemic has created really unusual circumstances for every employee in ECISD. Whatever the role may happen to be — whether it’s teacher, principal, cafeteria (worker), custodian — everyone has taken on additional responsibilities during this pandemic and we would like to make sure that we retain our very best employees and acknowledge the significant work that they’ve done. In addition to that, we have opportunities to recruit individuals in ECISD. We’re in need of more teachers custodians, etc., and we want to make sure that we fill vacancies,” Muri said. With this one-time bonus and continuing compensation, Muri said the district feels confident that it will put ECISD in a good position within the region and across the state as it recruits, attracts and retains “the highest caliber of employees for the students in ECISD.”Muri said the raise will be paid for out of the district’s general fund, including funding from the voter approved tax ratification election and House Bill 3. It will not require a tax increase. If approved, Muri said the raise would be seen in the first paycheck of the new school year.Muri also announced a Permian Basin Education Leadership Summit on May 5 at the Bush Convention Center in Midland. The summit is being supported by the Permian Strategic Partnership and the Education Partnership of the Permian Basin. He added that all educational leaders, such as superintendents and their teams, from West Texas and New Mexico are invited.“Our purpose is to think about the incredible opportunity we have using the federal stimulus dollars that are being transitioned from the federal government to districts across the Permian Basin,” Muri said. “We know that this one-time investment is significant. We want to make sure that strategically we are using those dollars to fully benefit the children that we serve, our staff members, as well as our community.”On summer learning, Muri said opportunities will be available for students from prekindergarten through 12th grade.“… This summer we have a high level of engaging, rigorous and exciting experiences. We’ve got a group of teachers and support professionals that have lined up and are excited to bring together some really fascinating exploratory opportunities for those children,” Muri said. “In addition, we have opportunities for middle school and high school students. … We’ve invested $250,000 in some robotics opportunities and whether you are prek or a senior in high school, robotics will kind of take over our summer learning experience.”Muri said people can visit the ECISD website for more information.
