Area coach Herbold to be honored

first_imgHerbold coached Poly from 1956 to 1968, leading the Jackrabbits to the 1963 CIF title. He moved to Lakewood and coached there from 1969 to 1983, winning CIF titles in 1970 and 1974. He then became head coach at Cal State Los Angeles, where he set the school record for most wins by a coach (455), won two CCAA titles and took the Golden Eagles to the 1998 NCAA Division II tournament. Legendary Long Beach high school baseball coach John Herbold, who won CIF championships at Poly and Lakewood high schools, will be honored in a dinner on March 31 at the Petroleum Club. Herbold’s friends, former players and colleagues created the dinner to honor his almost half-century of coaching baseball, a career that saw him win 938 games. Tickets cost $35.
