A judge has called a halt to a Donegal “tradition” after hearing Gardai and the public were being put at risk as a result.Donegal drinkers will be left thirsty on Christmas night!Nightclubs across Donegal have traditionally opened at one minute past midnight on December 26th to allow Christmas revellers celebrate the festive season, Letterkenny court heard. But now a Judge has ended the tradition after Garda objections heard the custom led to fighting and all sorts of other problems.Garda Supt Eugene McGovern told the court that one Garda was still off work after receiving injuries last year.Solicitors sought five special exemption orders for bar licenses at Letterkenny District Court yesterday. The applications were made on behalf of Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey, Patsy Dan’s club, Dunfanaghy, the Fleet’s Inn, Downings, Simpsons Club, Carndonagh, and The Bailey, RecastleSupt McGovern said “This doesn’t relate to any of these premises but last Christmas two of my officers were very seriously assaulted, one of whom still hasn’t been able to return to work,” he told Judge Paul Kelly. The senior Garda said he hadn’t objected to the license applications last year because Christmas had happened on a weekend. He added that fast food outlets had planned to open until 4am to serve the crowds expected at the clubs.“Our experience is that the patrons drink in the queues before the opening.“And then there is an ongoing issue with local people due to noise.“Fortunately in most areas of the country clubs don’t open on Christmas night. There is a history of opening here in Donegal.”Judge Paul Kelly said the evidence spoke for itself and said alcohol was the core factor for 95% of public order cases before him.“Supt McGovern and Sgt Lynch have given evidence of their concerns which are well founded and grounded in public safety,” said the judge.“They went out of the way to compliment the premises concerned. However on a daily basis in courts here we deal with a substantial number of public order offences and possibly 95% of them arise out of excessive consumption of alcohol.“The case are sadly always the same; a crowd spills onto the street, rows start and public order offences take place and in often injuries arise, sometimes bad injuries.”He refused the license applications in all cases.JUDGE CALLS LAST ORDERS ON DONEGAL CHRISTMAS NIGHT OPENING was last modified: December 20th, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:bar licenseCHristmas nightJudge Paul KellySupt Eugene McGovern

They also love keeping the cost to build their homes as low as possible. When energy codes ratcheted up in the 1980s and 1990s, cold-climate home builders eventually switched to 2×6 studs. But most production builders are still reluctant to install exterior rigid foam or furring strips. In Climate Zones 6, 7, and 8, new codes are forcing builders to consider the implications of the “R-20 + R-5” requirements for walls. But many builders are unhappy with current options for building high-R walls.Responding to builders’ concerns, engineers at a research facility associated with the National Association of Home Builders (the Home Innovation Research Labs, formerly known as the NAHB Research Center) have developed a new wall system called the “extended plate and beam” system. The main developers of the system were Vladimir Kochkin and Joe Wiehagen. (Wiehagen recently left his job at the Home Innovation Research Labs). Kochkin and Wieghagen wanted to come up with a wall that performs better than a typical 2×6 wall, but that isn’t expensive or scary enough to disturb production builders. Cantilevered plates At its most basic, here’s the idea: builders should frame 2×4 walls on 2×6 plates. The 2×6 plates should be flush with the 2x4s on the interior, but should be proud of the studs on the exterior. The protruding plates leave room for 2 inches of rigid foam to be installed on the exterior side of the studs (see the close-up image below). The OSB or plywood wall sheathing is installed on the exterior side of the rigid foam. In this respect, an “extended plate and beam” wall resembles a wall with Zip R sheathing. The International Cricket Council has turned down the BCCI’s request to sever ties with countries from which “terrorism emanates”, saying the ICC has no role to play in matters like these. In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack, in which more than 40 CRPF personnel were killed, the BCCI, in a letter to the ICC, urged the world body and its member nations to sever ties with countries which harbour terror.”There was no chance that anything like that would have happened. The ICC chairman made it clear that the decision to ostracize a nation is taken at the government level and ICC had no rule. The BCCI knew it all along but still took a chance,” a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. The BCCI letter did not make a specific reference to Pakistan, which has been accused of harbouring terrorists by India. The issue came up during Saturday’s ICC board meeting chaired by chairman Shashank Manohar but not much time was spent on it.The BCCI was represented at the board by acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary.”So many players from member nations play the Pakistan Super League and they would have never entertained such a request. Yes, security was a concern and it had been duly addressed,” the board official added. The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play Pakistan in the World Cup on June 16. There have been calls to boycott the clash in the wake of the heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries following the Pulwama attack.advertisementThe demand has been made by some of the biggest names in Indian cricket such as Harbhajan Singh and Sourav Ganguly. However, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) running Indian cricket has so far not taken any decision on the matter, saying that it will seek the government’s view. Also Read | ICC CEO assures BCCI of security at World Cup, Anil Kumble retained as Cricket Committee headAlso Read | We salute Wing Commander Abhinandan’s courage: BCCI acting president CK KhannaAlso Read | Has cricket in India suffered over the last 2 years? Citation: Humpback whales found to compose new communal song every few years (2018, November 21) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-11-humpback-whales-song-years.html A team of researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of St. Andrews has found that humpback whales abandon community songs every few years and pick up new ones. In their paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the group describes their multiyear study of humpback whale songs and what they found. This document is subject to copyright. DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2018.2088 Credit: CC0 Public Domain Some species of whales sing—humpback whales, in particular, are known for their songs. Interestingly, all male humpback whales sing the same song—though some do make some minor modifications to it. In this new effort, the researchers have discovered that every few years, humpback whales choose to abandon the song they all know, and learn to sing a new one. The research team made this finding by conducting a study of whale songs over the course of 13 years—listening in on humpback whales singing off the eastern coast of Australia and in the South Pacific. The researchers noticed that a new song would start out as a simple tune that would grow in size and complexity over time, eventually reaching a point at which it became ungainly. Some new group of whales would eventually abandon the song and come up with a new one, which they carried with them as they migrated to other parts of the ocean. Along the way, other whales would hear the song and abandon the old one, as well. Eventually, all the humpback males would be singing the same new tune. The researchers still cannot say for sure why the whales sing, though it is tied to the breeding season, or why they change their song every few years. They suspect it is because the song grows too complex, suggesting a cap on a learning curve—though it is possible the whales simply grow bored with it. The researchers note that social singing by the whales is an example of animal culture. And learning about animal culture could perhaps lead to a better understanding of how complex human culture evolved. They also note that the kind of cultural transmission seen in the whale songs has only ever been observed in humans. © 2018 Science X Network Journal information: Proceedings of the Royal Society B Male humpback whales change their songs when human noise is present
Eating vanilla yoghurts with lower fat content gives people a stronger positive emotional response, says a new study.“We were surprised to find that by measuring emotions, we could get information about products independent from whether people like them,” said lead author Jozina Mojet from Food & Biobased Research, Wageningen University in the Netherlands. The researchers used a new method called an emotive projection test to determine the effect of different yoghurts on people’s moods. Three groups of at least 24 participants were each given a pair of yoghurts to taste. The pairs of yoghurts were of the same brand and were marketed in the same way, but had different flavours or fat content. The team then tested their emotions using four methods, including the new emotive projection test. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’The researchers found that vanilla yoghurt elicited a strong positive emotional response, supporting previous evidence that a subtle vanilla scent in places like hospital waiting rooms can reduce aggression and encourage relationships among patients and between patients and staff. The team also looked at the sensory effect of the yoghurts. There was no difference in the emotional responses to strawberry versus pineapple yoghurts, but low-fat versions led to more positive emotional responses. The research was published in the journal Food Research International.

Twitterverse, take heed: The caché of possessing a highly sought-after Twitter handle has apparently escalated to the extent that hackers are now prepared to extort users for access to their usernames. The California web developer Naoki Hiroshima, for instance, says he was offered as much as $50,000 for his account, @N, while attempts to steal the name were recurrent. In a post published today, he recounts the cunning and systematic machinations that ultimately forced him to relinquish @N after a hacker compromised both his PayPal and GoDaddy accounts.Hiroshima had registered @N back in 2007. His new handle? @N_is_stolen.Related: The Only Thing Scarier Than Self-Driving Cars Are the Hackers Waiting to Attack Them Initial attempts to access the account were fairly pedestrian. A hacker contacted Hiroshima through Facebook messages asking him to change his Twitter login info, and then e-mailed Twitter in an attempt to reset the email address and password. When Twitter demanded more information, the hacker set his sights on Hiroshima’s GoDaddy account, which comprised various domain names that he’d paid for with a credit card attached to a PayPal account. Here’s where it gets scary: The hacker later admitted in an email to Hiroshima that he’d simply called PayPal and “used some very simple engineering tactics” on one of its agents to obtain the last four digits of Hiroshima’s credit card over the phone.Related: Uh, Did Your Refrigerator Just Send Me an Internet Virus? Then, in order to poach the GoDaddy account, the hacker told a GoDaddy agent that, “I had lost the card but I remembered the last four.” In a terrifying turn, the agent then allowed the hacker to simply guess the first two digits of the card number — all that was needed in order to gain complete access to Hiroshima’s domains. “I got it in the first call,” the hacker later admitted — part warning, part boast. “Most agents will just keep trying until they get it.”According to Hiroshima, the experience sets a chilling precedent: “To avoid their imprudence from destroying your digital life,” he wrote, “don’t let companies such as PayPal and GoDaddy store your credit card information.”Related: Target’s Security Breach Stresses the Need for Better Cyber Security January 29, 2014 Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Register Now »
