GAWU implores Govt for bonus for sugar workers

first_imgon the heels of an announcement of ,000 bonus for Public Sector employees, Government is now being asked to provide similar bonuses for sugar workers who, for the first time in 65 years, would not receive any Annual Production Incentive (API) and who have not received a pay increase in two years. The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) dispatched a letter to the President of Guyana David Granger, requesting that his Administration consider granting a bonus for the sugar workers who have been enduring much hardships over the past few months. The trade union body lauded the Government for approving the tax-free bonus of $25,000 for different categories of State employees but noted that it expected at least $50,000 as was given last year.Nonetheless, GAWU said the sugar workers would be grateful for a decent bonus from the Government around Christmas time.“A similar bonus to these workers would surely help, in some way, to offset expenses in the upkeep of their family, especially in this season of goodwill. We shall appreciate your favourable consideration of our request,” the Union expressed in the correspondence.Initially, Government planned on not granting public servants bonuses as no announcement was made during the recent budget presentation by Finance Minister Winston Jordan. After immense public outcry however, Government caved and eventually announced that Public Sector employees earning under $500,000 per month will be granted $25,000 tax-free bonus. The Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had criticised this paltry sum being offered, noting that Government has enough fiscal space to give the workers of this country much more.During a press conference on Thursday, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo pointed out that the major underspending for the year 2016 would provide Government with enough monies to give public servants a greater bonus for the year.Additionally, he asserted that the monies wasted behind scandals like the D’Urban Park Development Project and the house being rented from an APNU/AFC affiliate for millions of dollars to store condoms could be otherwise utilised to grant public servants a decent bonus.last_img read more

Klopp hands Sturridge Liverpool lifeline

first_imgWith 12 months left on his contract it appeared Sturridge’s Anfield career was over but he has looked sharp in his five friendly games and Klopp, who became frustrated by the player’s unavailability last season, is prepared to hand him a lifeline.“We’re not in doubt — and nobody was ever in doubt — about his quality,” the Liverpool manager told liverpoolfc.com.“In this moment he looks really good to be honest. That’s cool — really cool for him and cool for us. (It’s) a very important moment for him. I am in talks with him, what he feels.“I don’t want to make him the most physically strong player in the squad or whatever.“The most physically strong player in the squad cannot play football like Daniel Sturridge and he has no possibility to be that, to be the marathon man of the team, but he can be a very decisive player.”Sturridge could be in line to start the Premier League campaign at home to West Ham on August 12, with Roberto Firmino and new goalkeeper and fellow Brazil international Alisson only rejoining the squad at next week’s training camp in France.Liverpool are currently taking part in the International Champions Cup in the United States.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge in action during the 2018 International Champions Cup in the United States© AFP JIM WATSONLONDON, United Kingdom, July 25 -Jurgen Klopp says Daniel Sturridge can be a “decisive player” for Liverpool after impressive displays from the injury-plagued striker in pre-season matches.Sturridge, 28, went to West Brom on loan in January but was injured early on and managed just six appearances.last_img read more

Buffalo stampedes Kings

first_imgBUFFALO, N.Y. – Excuse rookie forward Jason Pominville for not remembering the last time the Buffalo Sabres scored 10 goals. It hasn’t happened in almost 13 years, when Pominville was a 10-year-old growing up in Quebec. He won’t forget this one. Pominville, with a natural hat trick, and Jochen Hecht scored three goals apiece in Buffalo’s 10-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. Jeff Cowan, scoring late in the first period, had the lone goal for the Kings, who gave up 10 goals for the first time since a 10-3 loss to Washington on Feb. 13, 1993. The margin of defeat matched the Kings’ worst since a 9-0 loss to Montreal in the 1975-76 season opener. “They walked all over us,” Kings captain Mattias Norstrom said. “A loss like this you start to talk about pride. As a team, as individuals, we got embarrassed out there.” Goalie Mathieu Garon, coming off a 6-0 win at Boston on Thursday night, had the toughest night. Garon allowed four goals on 10 shots and was pulled twice, the final time after Hecht scored on a screened shot from the right circle midway through the first period. Drury made sure to remind everyone that this was only one game, while noting the Sabres prepare to open a six-game road swing, their longest of the season. “It’s nothing to gloat about,” Drury said. “It’s two points and we’ll move on.” It didn’t help that the Kings are a banged up team. Pavol Demitra missed his fourth game with a leg injury while Lubomir Visnovsky, second among NHL defenseman with 45 points (13 goals and 32 assists), did not play because of flu-like symptoms. No excuses, Kings coach Andy Murray said, who did not address his team after the game. “I said most of my things after the first and second periods,” Murray said. “I said my piece and it was time for them to come up with an explanation. … We just weren’t very good.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. So it’s fun to see the team work hard and have it finally pay off.” Hecht also will have fond memories of the game after recording the first career three-goal game in his six-year NHL career “Happy to get it out of the way, but it’s also great for `Pommer’ to get his first one, too,” Hecht said. Chris Drury had a goal and three assists, Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists and Jay McKee and Daniel Paille also scored. Tim Connolly and Mike Grier had three assists each for Buffalo, which built a 5-0 lead 17 minutes in. The 10 goals were the most the Sabres scored since a 10-7 win over Detroit on Feb 24, 1993. The Sabres also snapped a two-game winless streak (0-1-1), their longest since losing four straight from Nov. 2-9. last_img

SA’s Peppadew to take bite of US

first_imgThe piquanté pepper from which thePeppadew range is produced was found in 1993 by South African farmer Johan Steenkamp when, holidaying in the Western Cape province, he spotted a bush covered with red fruit that looked like a crossbetween small peppers and tomatoes. The products are processed and bottled by Peppadew International using a secret recipe.Despite using no preservatives, the company claims a 24-month shelf life for its peppery products.Import and export company Strohmeyer & Arpe, which currently markets the Peppadew range in the US, describes the fruit as “the first truly new fruit to be launched on the world market since kiwifruit”.Exclusive licenceBell has manufacturing operations in five countries, and research facilities in 10. The company was established in 1912 and is a globally respected supplier of flavours and fragrances to the food, beverage, cosmetic, household, personal and oral care, and tobacco industries around the world. The exclusive licence agreement to produce liquid Peppadew flavour was signed in mid-October 2009. Bell’s agreement with Peppadew International means that it is now the only flavour house allowed to use the Peppadew name.Superfruit!Bell believes that Peppadew piquanté peppers could be the next superfruit, and the flavour has huge potential for a host of uses. Superfruit are those natural wonders that have such exceptional nutritional, health and taste qualities that they can actually attract customers to a brand and retain them, and consequently are specifically marketed as such.Bell’s marketing director Michael Natale, speaking to FoodNavigator-USA.com, praised the peppers for their unusual piquancy, describing them as “very interesting … unlike anything you have tasted before, a mixture of sweet and spicy”.This unusual flavour means that Bell is able to target its Peppadew flavour at sweet applications as well as savoury. Natale noted that the combination of sweet and spicy originated in the chocolate industry, with its famous chilli chocolate. He named baked goods, confectionery and ice creams as just a few of the possibilities, as well as beverages and savoury sauces. But this is just the start, said Peppadew International MD Phillip Ovens. “We want to diversify our range overseas, but within category, so not outside the pickled category range. Over the next 10 years, our goal is to have an international brand.”Top 10 flavours of 2009In January 2009 Bell released its three-category list of the top 10 flavours to look out for in 2009. The list is compiled from various sources, including market research companies and the media, tracking trends on four continents, and analysing samples requested over the previous 12 months. While Peppadew didn’t make the sweet list, it came in eighth on the savoury list and did even better on the beverage flavour list, ranking fifth.Africa’s iconic marula fruit did make the sweet list, ranking at number eight.Mildly spicyPeppadew piquanté peppers are grown primarily in the Tzaneen area of South Africa’s Limpopo province. As picking and de-seeding is done by hand, the growing demand for the product has created over 4 800 jobs in the field, and more than 200 in the factory.Peppadew International also supports its supply base of around 80 farmers with training and technical assistance.Piquanté peppers belong to the Solanaceae family of nightshade plants, and share the genus Capsicum with many other chilli peppers, ranging in taste from mild to blisteringly hot. Botanically, chilli peppers are fruit.Fortunately the little red piquantés rank low down on the Scoville scale, which measures the hotness of a chilli pepper based on the amount of capsaicin – the fiery chemical compound that is responsible for many a teary eye and sudden thirst for water – contained in it. The number of Scoville heat units indicates the amount of capsaicin present.Compared to the world’s hottest chilli, the Naga Jolokia which comes in at a searing 1 040 000, the piquanté barely bites at 1 177.Its mildly spicy but sweet flavour makes it popular in all sorts of recipes such as pizza, pasta, salads, omelettes and dips. The piquanté also tempts when stuffed with a range of soft cheeses.Welcome visitorThe plant was reportedly discovered in 1993 by South African farmer Johan Steenkamp. On holiday in the Western Cape province, he spotted a bush covered with red fruit that looked like a combination of small peppers and tomatoes.Steenkamp realised the plant’s potential the minute he tasted a piece of the fruit and he decided to cultivate it with dried seeds from the original plant, which is not indigenous to South Africa but is believed to have somehow made the Atlantic crossing from South America. It has taken some years to breed the strongest plants from that original batch, develop the processing methods, perfect the recipes, and register the trademark Peppadew. The product has germinated into a winner, and today is available in a number of countries and has taken the culinary world by storm.Steenkamp has since sold his share of the company and is not involved in any way, but he does collect royalties on the original product, said Ovens.last_img read more

ODI 3: India look to seal series against Gayle-less WI

first_imgA formidable lead in hand, a sprightly India would be aiming to seal the series when they take on a depleted and low-on-confidence West Indies in the third cricket one-dayer of a five-match series, here on Saturday. In what would be good news for the Indian camp, West Indies appear to have mortally wounded themselves by leaving out the explosive Chris Gayle yet again because of his ongoing feud with the Cricket Board.Down 0-2 and with the series on line, West Indies selectors have also gone ahead and rested Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul. The WICB deciding to hold back the announcement of team for the fourth one-day international on Monday, however, would suggest they are keen for this deadlock to break.Bravo and Rampaul are missing because the former has requested for a break and was granted while the latter is suffering from the ill-effects of a heavy workload. It is ironic that while the young Indians are clamouring for more games and more pressure, the West Indian players are seeking breaks at such a crucial juncture in the series.Be that as it may, it leaves a mediocre West Indies squad even more depleted. On paper, West Indies have two tearaway fast bowlers in the returning Kemar Roach and Andre Russell but the batting friendly conditions could make them ineffective against a rampant young Indian side.Batting has been the decisive factor at this Caribbean ground where 300 runs is a norm and frontline bowlers are known to go in excess of 50 runs from their 10 overs.advertisementWest Indies, to top it, have never won any of their four games at this venue after being clobbered for 158 runs by Australian Matthew Hayden in a 2007 World Cup game. Not only the cricket team but even infrastructure-wise, West Indies is facing huge embarrassment. The ground staff of Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad allowed the square to be so sodden by a passing shower that 13 overs were lopped off from the second one-day international on Wednesday. The local fans are also keeping their fingers crossed as the last Test against England in 2009 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here was abandoned after umpires ruled the ground unfit to play due to sandy outfield. In all, only 10 balls were bowled in that match. But all this set aside, the Indians have mastered the conditions pretty well and practically all batsmen, barring Yusuf Pathan, have had a decent hit in the middle. .If the clinical wins in the first two ODIs were any indication, the Indians have coped with the absence of seniors such as Sachin Tendulkar and regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni pretty well. The visitors can’t wait for the game to start as they are likely to get value for the shots which wasn’t the case on extremely sluggish surface in Trinidad.Interestingly, spinners haven’t had much purchase at this venue. It is another thing though that the hosts may still not come to terms with India’s slow men.The reputation of Harbhajan Singh and the class of Amit Mishra is presently proving too much for them.Indian batsmen are doing the task competently but given the rank amateurishness of this West Indies team, their job has only been simplified.Teams (from)West Indies: Darren Sammy (capt), Carlton Baugh, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, Danza Hyatt, Kemar Roach, Anthony Martin, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Lendl Simmons.India: Suresh Raina (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, S Badrinath, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Ishant Sharma. The match will begin 6.30 pm IST.- With inputs from PTIlast_img read more
