first_imgDDTV: FROM a taster class at the gym to winning first place in a national competition, Sinead Doherty has ripped into the weightlifting world with a vengeance. The 23-year-old Letterkenny woman travelled to Cork Institute of Technology at the weekend to take part in the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association competition, one of the biggest powerlifting events to be held in Ireland. The former NUI Galway Arts student managed to deadlift 140kg to win her category and lift her first weightlifting trophy.Speaking back at training at FitHub Letterkenny this morning, Sinead said: “I was nervous but I just went for it. One girl lifted 110 and then another lifted 125 so I knew I was just going to go for it.”Amazingly, Sinead’s lift was also a new ‘record’ but at she has only been registered for two months instead of the obligatory three, it could not be recognised. For someone who only started training just more than a year ago, her friends at FitHub gym are over the moon with Sinead’s win. Owner and head coach at Fithub,Neil Barrett, said it was a fantastic achievement.“It’s her moment and we are very proud of her.”Sinead said she has seen an increase in the number of women of all ages who are starting to lift heavy.“You would be amazed at the weights that some young girls can lift. It’s amazing to watch them.“It was my sister who dragged me to my first CrossFit class. It was a taster class and I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t really into anything at the time. I had done some rugby but I wouldn’t have said that I was fit.“But I soon got addicted to it and I looked forward to traveling up from college on Saturdays to train. I never wanted to be skinny. I wanted to be fit. When I started lifting Neil said that I was a natural so it went from there.” Sinead trains three times a week and follows a Paleo diet.“You can make anything Paleo; bread, chocolate anything. I eat dairy as well. It was hard to adjust to some of the tastes at first but then you just get used to it.”Sinead’s next goal is the IDFPA event in Belfast in July. She said: “I’ll just keep training and hopefully after Belfast I’ll be looking forward to the European competition.” DDTV: DONEGAL GIRL POWER LIFTS TO A FIRST WIN IN NATIONAL COMPETITION was last modified: February 23rd, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:FitHubletterkennypowerliftingSinead Dohertylast_img
